Privacy Policy

Last updated May 31, 2012

This privacy policy sets out the information gathering and dissemination practices for this website by the Toronto School of Practical Philosophy.

The School of Practical Philosophy takes the issue of security and privacy seriously. We respect our visitors’ right to both their privacy and security of their data. To that end, we collect and use information throughout our website only as disclosed below.

What information do we collect about you?

Personally identifiable information:

The School of Practical Philosophy collects personally identifiable information from you only with your knowledge and consent. We do not collect any personally identifiable information through our own website and/or store it in an online environment, other than the information you submit to us either in an online form, by email, or when you sign up for our email newsletters.  (For more on about our email mailing list, click here.)

If you register for courses or events online you will be directed to our third party service provider, Administrative Software Applications, Inc. (ASA), where you will be required to set up an account and will be asked to submit information specific for the purposes of registration. ASA retains basic demographic information such as name, e-mail and any other information necessary to process the credit card and conduct the transaction. However, ASA does not retain credit card information on payment transactions processed on any of ASA’s websites.  The information stored on ASA’s servers is only accessible by the School of Practical Philosophy and by ASA authorized employees or representatives. By using their website and making online purchases through ASA you agree to the terms and conditions and privacy policy as set out by them.  Please review their policies prior to using their website.

Automatic Collection of Information:

We collect non-personally identifiable information from you in order for us to better understand how our website is used. Information about a user’s visit is logged; however, your IP address is never referenced to personally identifiable information. Usage statistics are gathered in a non-intrusive manner. The log files are private documents and are primarily used by the server administrator for error notification, server administration and to monitor website performance. At times portions of the log files may be viewed by others for the purpose of server administration, security or when required by law.

The School of Practical Philosophy collects, tracks and analyzes website stats using Google Analytics. Google utilizes the data collected to track and examine the use of the websites, to prepare reports on its activities and share them with other Google services. Google may use the data collected to contextualize and personalize the ads of its own advertising network.  Due to user privacy concerns, Google Analytics doesn’t report on personally identifiable information, including a visitor’s IP address. Find Google’s privacy policy here.

Some pages on this website use a technology called “cookies”. A cookie is a token that a server gives to your browser when you access a website. Cookies are capable of storing many types of data. Cookies help provide additional functionality to the website or to help us analyze website usage more accurately. For instance, our server may set a cookie that keeps you from having to enter a password more than once during a visit to one of our websites. In all cases in which cookies are used, we will not collect personally identifiable information except with your explicit permission. With most Internet browsers, you can erase cookies from your computer hard drive, block all cookies, or receive a warning before a cookie is stored. Please refer to your browser instructions or help screen to learn more about these functions.

Do we disclose the information we collect to outside parties?

We do not sell, trade, or otherwise transfer to outside parties your personally identifiable information unless we provide you with advance notice, and you agree to this sharing. The term “outside parties” does not include the School of Practical Philosophy. It also does not include website hosting partners and other parties who assist us in operating our website, conducting our business, or servicing you, so long as those parties agree to keep this information confidential. We may release your information when we believe release is appropriate to comply with the law, enforce our site policies, or protect ours or others’ rights, property, or safety.

Email Mailing List

We will never exchange, lend or sell our e-mail mailing list to anyone. Information submitted to us is only available to employees managing this information for purposes of sending you e-mails and to contracted service providers for purposes of providing services relating to our communications with you.

We use our electronic newsletter and email for communicating to individuals from whom we have received consent. If you sign up for our e-mail newsletter, all we need from you is your e-mail address. Each newsletter that we e-mail will display the e-mail address of the recipient with simple instructions on how to unsubscribe (opt-out) from the e-newsletter list. Each e-newsletter will also contain a link that will allow you to login in to the e-mail system and change the data that is there so that you are always in control of the information you provide.

Statistics are gathered from the e-mails in order to track the effectiveness of the mailings. We never share, sell, or rent this information to anyone. This information is only used for our own internal purposes.

Privacy Policy Changes

The Toronto School of Practical Philosophy may deem it necessary or appropriate from time to time to modify this privacy policy to reflect changes in the way we collect or use information or changes in privacy-related laws, regulations, or industry standards. Please check these terms periodically for changes. Using this site following the posting of changes to these terms shall constitute your acceptance of the revised terms. Information will be handled according to the privacy statement in effect at the time the information is used.
